Description

Breast Surgical Oncology

Breast Surgical Oncology focuses on the diagnosis and surgical management of breast cancer and other breast conditions requiring specialized surgical care. Breast cancer treatment has evolved significantly, with modern approaches aiming not only to treat the cancer effectively but also to preserve breast function, appearance, and overall quality of life whenever appropriate.

Dr. Priyank Chawathe provides an individualized approach to patients requiring evaluation and surgical treatment for breast cancer. Treatment planning is based on the type, size, stage, location, and characteristics of the tumor, along with the patient's overall health and personal treatment goals.

Comprehensive Breast Cancer Evaluation

A detailed evaluation may include clinical breast examination, mammography, ultrasound, breast MRI when appropriate, biopsy, and pathological assessment. These investigations help determine the nature and extent of the disease and assist in developing an appropriate treatment plan.

Depending on the individual case, treatment may involve breast-conserving surgery, mastectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, lymph node surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of treatments.

Breast-Conserving & Oncoplastic Surgery

For appropriately selected patients, breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) may be considered to remove the cancer while preserving as much of the breast as safely possible. Oncoplastic techniques may be used in selected cases to help achieve a good balance between cancer removal and breast appearance.

When mastectomy is required, reconstruction may be considered depending on the patient's medical condition, cancer treatment plan, and individual preferences.

Multidisciplinary Cancer Care

Breast cancer treatment often involves more than surgery. Dr. Priyank Chawathe follows a multidisciplinary approach, with cases evaluated in coordination with medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, reconstructive surgery, and other specialists when required.

Tumor Board-based discussions can help determine the most appropriate sequence and combination of treatments for each patient, particularly in complex cases

Personalized & Patient-Centered Care

Every breast cancer diagnosis is different. Treatment decisions are made after considering the cancer characteristics, stage, overall health, treatment goals, and individual circumstances.

Dr. Priyank Chawathe emphasizes **careful surgical planning, evidence-based treatment, clear communication, and coordinated follow-up care**. The goal is to provide effective cancer treatment while preserving function, supporting recovery, and maintaining the patient's quality of life whenever possible.

Patients with a new breast lump, abnormal breast imaging, nipple changes, or a confirmed breast cancer diagnosis should seek timely medical evaluation. Early assessment and appropriate treatment planning can play an important role in achieving the best possible outcomes.
